Asafa Powell ready for new best time in Brussels
After the sad dope news of Justin Gatlin, Asafa Powell (on the pic with the painted poster of the Golden League event in Brussels) became the only one world record holder on the queen's number of the 100m sprint. That makes him very happy: "I have always done my best to get that WR for me alone. I regret that it happens in this way. Now, most of our fans will start to doubt at the top performance of all sprinters. That's not so nice, of course."Powell missed the GL-meeting in Brussels in 2005. Therefore, he'd really like to run in the Belgian capital this year. "The second time that i was here, after Paris and Athens in 2004, i ran to a personal best (9.87). If i want to repeat such a new PB performance, i have to improve the WR of 9.77. I realise that. It will be very important not to forget the diving movement at the finish line. In Zurich, previous week, i have forgotten to do this movement. That can be the reason for a loss of a part of a second. On the long term i want to improve the middle part of my 100m sprint. I'm still able to make progress in this part of the race."
That the meteo services anounce bad weather for tomorrow, is no problem for Powell. "I have already performed very good chrono's in bad weather conditions. Of course i hope that it will not rain. But cold temperatures are no problem for me. I support that good. A car also rides faster when the road is a bit wetter... (laughs)"
The Jamaican sprinter bought the painted poster of the Memorial Golden League event in Brussels for 5000 euros. This amount of money will go to an aids protection project of Unicef in Namibia. The painting is made by Martin Uvijn. Powell explained why he bought the painting for a lucky goal: "My interest for art started to grow when I was in high school. Recently I've bought my firsts real paintings. This will be the tird one in my collection. But I bought it because i think it's so beautiful."
