Asafa Powell ready for new best time in Brussels

After the sad dope news of Justin Gatlin, Asafa Powell (on the pic with the painted poster of the Golden League event in Brussels) became the only one world record holder on the queen's number of the 100m sprint. That makes him very happy: "I have always done my best to get that WR for me alone. I regret that it happens in this way. Now, most of our fans will start to doubt at the top performance of all sprinters. That's not so nice, of course."

Powell missed the GL-meeting in Brussels in 2005. Therefore, he'd really like to run in the Belgian capital this year. "The second time that i was here, after Paris and Athens in 2004, i ran to a personal best (9.87). If i want to repeat such a new PB performance, i have to improve the WR of 9.77. I realise that. It will be very important not to forget the diving movement at the finish line. In Zurich, previous week, i have forgotten to do this movement. That can be the reason for a loss of a part of a second. On the long term i want to improve the middle part of my 100m sprint. I'm still able to make progress in this part of the race."

That the meteo services anounce bad weather for tomorrow, is no problem for Powell. "I have already performed very good chrono's in bad weather conditions. Of course i hope that it will not rain. But cold temperatures are no problem for me. I support that good. A car also rides faster when the road is a bit wetter... (laughs)"

The Jamaican sprinter bought the painted poster of the Memorial Golden League event in Brussels for 5000 euros. This amount of money will go to an aids protection project of Unicef in Namibia. The painting is made by Martin Uvijn. Powell explained why he bought the painting for a lucky goal: "My interest for art started to grow when I was in high school. Recently I've bought my firsts real paintings. This will be the tird one in my collection. But I bought it because i think it's so beautiful."

European sprint queen gets gold Nike shoes

The new European champion on the 100 and 200m sprint, the Belgian Kim Gevaert, will get new shoes from her sponsor Nike. After her victories on the European Championships in the Swedish Göteborg Nike has developped a shoe with a gold emblem with stars (representing the European flag). Also her winnig times on the 100m (11.06) and 200m sprint (22.68) in Göteborg will be on the new spikes. 11.06 will come on the left shoe, while 22.68 will be printed on the right one. Also her name will be placed on her brandnew shoes. The "i" in Kim Gevaert will be replaced by a magic staff... Gevaert will wear her new shoes for the first time tomorrow evening on the Memorial in Brussels.

WR attempt for Shaheen on Golden League Brussels

Saif Saaeen Shaheen (picture: on the Golden League in Brussels in 2005), the 23 year old reigning world champion and world record holder in the steeplechaise discipline, will attempt to improve his own WR tomorrow on the last but one Golden League Event "Memorial Ivo Vandamme" in the King Boudewijn Stadium in Brussels.

After the previous Golden League event, past week in de Weltklasse in Zurich, the steeplechaiser told he is not happy with the performance of his tempo makers. Now Shaheen is sollicitating for 3 new tempo makers who will bring him to the 2km point. "The track in Brussels is a quick one, i know that. I never run a race in Brussels who disappointed me."

However, a problem is raising for Shaheen. Peter Koech was announced to be one of the three tempo makers for Shaheen, but Koech announced recently that he will not do it. Also other distance runners don't seem to be in a very good shape to guide Shaheen to a new WR in the steeplechaise discipline. "I want to run a time of 7.52 or even beneath it", Shaheen made clear. With only one day left till the big day for Shaheen, the organisation hasn't announced yet the ultimate tempo makers who will participate in the WR attempt...

Past week, the organisation of the GL-event in Brussels worked very hard to finish the new track. A brandnew track has been installed. It seems even that this one is a little bit quicker than the one of the year(s) before. This is good news for Shaheen, of course. But... Unluckily, the Belgian meteo services announce bad, rainy wether for Brussels on friday.
